Unable to connect my laptop to internet

Hello,
I have just loaded the XP pro OS into my laptop. Was trying to connect to intermet using lans cable. It doesn't connect and says IP address not found. I try to repair it thru the repair button and it says error and unable to repair. I have connected other laptops to the same services provided and it is working. My connection are connect through moderm through router. Could it be the hardware? if yes, can it be replace or what other choice do i have.
