Hi,
I suggest you check if WhatsApp is allowed to work in the background and whitelist it from battery optimization. If the app is blocked by the system, the auto backup will not work.
Make sure the Google account of your mother is correctly sync with WhatsApp, you can try to manually back up the data to see if it is effective.
Also, the phone need to be connected to Internet and have sufficent battery to allow the backup process.
