Instagram Hacked - Error with Verification Tool - Need Help!

My IG was hacked on Sunday, and I am having a very difficult time with this verification process. When I get to the point of entering the code from the email that is sent to me, the app just won't open the camera. It's like it goes into a slow death spin and gets stuck there. I kept thinking it's my hacker trying to kick me out. I checked my App permissions and allowed for the camera, etc. I uninstalled IG, re-started my phone and then re-installed IG as well as making sure all the cache was cleared. I made sure to remove any third party apps. I have a Google Pixel 7 phone - which is Android (most are iPhone). I have scoured the Internet trying to find anyone who has encountered this and cannot locate any information, which is crazy. I cannot be the only person who has a Google Pixel phone who is coming across this issue, so I don't know what to do. The weird thing is, a friend of mine on IG, who was hacked by my hacker, has already recovered her Instagram by the selfie verification. 

I even tried the process on my laptop - but when I type in in my username (both mine and the one the hacker changed it to) - it just takes me to the help center. 

I'm not an influencer, just a wife/Mom who has had this IG for 10 years and is sick to my stomach that this hacker now has access to all these things in my life. If anyone has any thoughts on what to do or why this is happening? Is it because it's a Google Pixel phone?
