The easiest answer to give is to follow this guidance from Ubuntu
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
the main thing to take note of is
http://help.ubuntu.com/...
However, it might be easier to try just finding & copying an uninfected copy of that file back into the right place in Xp. With linux you can surf the internet and google it? This often works with files such as "hal.dll" and an amazing number of things. I'm not sure it would work with Vista but Xp is great :) It would be a good plan to copy your data from the Xp side into your Documents folder or perhaps even better to copy your data to external drive or onto dvds. A Windows install will always wipe your Windows partition (the "C:'drive'")
Another thing worth trying if you have the Xp or Recovery Cd is to boot it into "Repair Mode" even this has a nasty habit of wiping data sometimes so again i would recommend backing up your data onto another partition or onto an external drive or something
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
