Hello,
If I install windows xp using a parallel hard drive it installs okay. If I use a serial hard drive when the install reaches install it states their is no hard drive present. During boot the hard drive is present. Also, if I install a serial hard drive with windows on it it boots up okay.

The problem here is that the installation requires drivers for the sata drive that you are installing onto.
I had the same issue with my laptop that had vista on it, i wiped it to put XP pro on it. the install bombed out half way because the hdd is a sata hdd. I think, if I remember rightly (was a while ago) you need to go into the bios of the machine you are installing on and set the sata/ide channel.

I think there is an answer amongst those links to your problem.
