Windows wont open external hdd

Hello, whenever i run windows xp and connect my WD 1TB external hdd windows tells me its there, but does not let me open it. explorer crashes if i do. yet, whenever i connect the same hdd while running ubuntu i can access it without any trouble. can anyone tell me how to fix this if possible?
