NO SOUND!!

Hello,
I had to restore my pc but when I got done there was no sounds at all. How do I fix this problem? I have a Compaq presario with windows xp, I called compaq but they want to charge me forty nine dollars. I have had a stroke and I depend on my pc for entertainment and to commincate with my grandkids, please help
