Lost memory space after a back up

Hello,
I just backed up my entire computer onto an external hard drive and now my c-drive has lost about 10GB of free space. Can someone explain how this happened and how I can get it back? I defragmented and cleaned the discs but it had no effect.

are you sure its was sent to the

external drive ?

or you made a back on the drive itself?
