You will have to install your sound device driver to be able to use the mic!
Just install the driver from your software cd or download it from the HP Support Website:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/pfinder?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&tool=&query=Presario+c700
Select your laptop model and download the driver for XP
