My sound is gone

Hello,
I have lost my sound. I have had some trouble for some time and have had to to to Creative Media Source and change my settings from Games to Entertainment then back to Games to get the sound to come on. It's been a bother, but has worked fine. Today, I can't get the games button to click. I'm stuck on Entertainment mode and getting no sound. I did the diagnostic check and the direct sound failed. My computer tells me my systems are all working fine. I went on line and googled and came up with a screen saying I needed to update my drivers. So, for $40, I did that. Still nothing. Please help!! I am a computer nerd but i like to have sound.
