Vista only works in safe mode Compaq laptop

Hello,
My other Laptop a Compaq Pressario V3000 running Vista will only work in Safe Mode. On start up in normal mode the screen goes completely black after the Welcome screen comes up. What could this be - a virus? a hardware issue?
