this could be any number of problems.
is the bios screen visible when you start or is it completely blank?
usualy if its blank then this could mean a faulty memory module or processor. my bet would be mem check first.
if you know someone with a spare memory chip of the same bus speed then try that out or if you have a twin memory modules installed take one out at a time leaving the other in and try a reboot. Another way to tell if this is a memory issue you will hear a long/constant drone sound indicating a problem when you try to switch on or boot.
If its a faulty graphics card usualy you still get some screen response like flicker, lines blank white screen or blank with other colour. sometimes there will be nothing. check the connection between card and monitor, check none of the pins are bent or broken on the connections.
if this was a hard drive issue then you would still get the boot screen with a drive failure message so you can rule that out if the machine is not showing cmos config during boot.
ofcourse there is the issue if an upgrade of componants has be done that they correspond correctly to the bus and speed ratings aswell as the power rating. Incorrectly installed devices can have fatal consequences for any pc or laptop.
if all of the above doesnt seem to help the best thing to do is have it taken into a reputable pc specialist who will probably diagnose your problem in 5 minutes flat or within 24 hours for more complicated issues.
good luck...
