Hello,
I just got a laptop with windows vista (yuk), and i need to downgrade that to windows xp, formatting the drive and all. I boot from the CD and after the initial loading session, a message comes up saying there is no hard drive detected, and windows doesn't install

Windows XP does not have drivers for the advanced SATA controller that is in your laptop. Google "slipstream" for instructions on slipstreaming the SATA drivers into you Windows XP disk.

Please be advised that is just your FIRST problem. You will then have problems with finding other hardware drivers for the motherboard.

Good Luck
