No sound or devices installed

Hello,
i was doing a update on vista when it wiped vista out, so i wasnt about to pay for a boot disk so installed windows xp, since then im missing my either card and sound card for sure, now is there a free way to get all my drives up to date? i suspect missing more but can io fix for free?
