Thanks for the suggestion. I did try this but the problem remains. I suspect that the PC does not have a sound card. Could this be the reason? How can I check? If so, what should I do?
I think this may be the reason because there was and still is a 'Realtek high definition audio driver' in the device manager sub-folder 'Sound, video and game controllers.' However, in the 'Sound' folder in the control panel, under both the 'playback' and 'recording' tabs, the message says "no audio devices are installed."
