Lost external hard drive

Hello,
Hi,
I had another nasty Trojan and it stopped me opening any programs, I have now cleaned my hard drive out and re-loaded xp.
I cannot get any thing about the external hard drive, it seems not to exist.
I have tried to open this with PC and Laptop, No joy.
Help, I need info from in the external as I thought that was a safe way of keeping my records etc,
