Usb cd drive will not run program disks

Hello, I recently purchased an Acer aspire one netbook. I took the old cd/dvd drive from my dell inspiron 5100 and put it in a usb optical drive case to use with my netbook. The computer recognizes the usb optical drive, and the drive will play audio cds burned or otherwise, but when i insert my microsoft office cd to load office, or motorola phone tools, it acts as if there is no disk in the drive? Any suggestions on what could be causing the problem and how to fix it? Thanks!
