Windows xp home edition Problem

Hello,
My ThinkPad R40e.

when I open it goes through the motion of starting then when the windows xp comes up it starts the cycle of the banner then it starts to freeze then it continuously to restart. Can anyone help. Don't have any disks to help. Won't let me in to use safe mode..

Hello
I have an IBM ThinkPad R40e. When I open the laptop and push the start button it goes to the IBM ThinkPad banner, then it goes to the Windows XP banner with the scroll underneath it. It starts to scroll for a while then it stops for a little while and then it starts all over again from the IBM ThinkPad banner.
