Sound doesn't work

Hello,
im having a sound problem. I go to turn up the volume settings on the computer and i get a message that says "There are no active mixer divices availlable." then it tells you where to go and do everything but my problem is why did this issue happen in the first place, and why can't I plug speakers in or headphones in and have sound??
