I think there's something wrong with your headset port...
Maybe there's a little circuitry that has been disconnected...
Or maybe the headset you had used...
Have you tried to use your headset in other computer...?
It it will work, then your headset is okey...
Maybe in the software you installed in your computer...
But have you tried to use the laptop's speaker, just to test if the driver you have installed is working...?
Just try... and try...
