Why do I need to re format external hard driv

Hello,
I've been using a WD external hard drive for months. Sometimes it couldn't be found by my computer. I wasn't too concerned about that. However, now it shows no memory space used and it wants me to format it. What could have happened? Should I format it? Will this wipe out everything? Do I even have anything left?

Cant you open your hard-drive?

I would recommend that you back-up your stuff and Format it ( If you format everything goes ofc )
