I had the same problem with a Samsung 80 GB once; even a format would not delete anything. It turned out to be a hardware problem with the drive (the write head, perhaps?).
Anyway, I was told there was nothing that could be done, and they would replace the drive, since it was under warranty. But since I couldnt delete my files, I was uncomfortable giving it away for replacement. So, I've ended up with possibly the world's securest backup!
