Wont even start

Hello,
my laptop is a compaq, i was running itunes on christmas when i noticed it froze because the music was skipping and had no control of any keys so i held the power button to turn it off, ever since, when i hit the power button it turns on for about enough time for the lights to flash then it shuts back down, is this my battery or sumthing else.
