Lost downloads when laptop turned off

Hello,
I download photos from an SD card to my inspiron laptop and then they're gone after turning it off. Everything is gone when I turn it back on. What could be the problem?

Dear Sir,

If you were downloading the files and then turned off the computer, it is normal that the download will not continue. Please provide more details about the problem so that we can help you appropriately.

No, I download them and they are there as long as the computer is on. But after I turn it off and then later turn it back on they're gone. It's like when i turn off my laptop everything that I've saved to my computer is deleted.
