Hello,
Please can any one help I have a laptop HP good spec running Vista when I plug in my external HDD vista wants to format it as I have much needed data on the drive no mater what I do in my computer it is their but wont let you explore it . It tells me you need to format the drive I also have a desk top computer with win 7 on and it says the same thing format the drive

You probably have a problem with the MBR (master Boot Record) caused by unplugging the drive while it was still updating. I would try one of the Partition recovery programs. Easeus Partition Master Home Edition is free and works well. Try its MBR recovery or Partition recovery options.
