Sound from projector via laptop

Hello,
I'm trying to get sound from my projector Hitachi CPS210 via my laptop, Acer Aspire but no luck yet.
The instructions say to use small audio jack from laptop audio out to projector audio in. Sounds simple enough but I still haven't any sound.

Please, can someone help. This is urgent - I need it for a presentation that has video clips.

does the sound play from your laptop when the video is played?
if you connect, say, someones ipod to the projector in the manner suggested, does the projector play the sound.

check that the mute has not been set on the projector
