Windows xp wont start up

Hello,
my pc is a few years its an ernis god of speed my dad got it from work, it has had its problomes for an example the mother bord fryed a while ago. now when you go to turn it on every thing works except for the screen it stays black! if any one has any helpfull ideas pleas let me know! oh, its an xp home eddition.
