Hey guys,
I really need your help and im hoping someone can help me. Every time I want to open a program it says "choose a program you want to use to run this file". I have tried different methods such as typing in "CMD" to the "Run" section of either my start folder and my Windows Task Manager. Every time I do somthing like typing in one of these codes this choose a program box pops up again and if I click one of the choices it gives me a download, exits the download, and says choose a program again. As you can see I need some help.

Greetings to all of you,

Please read this:

The virus in question has modified registry keys which prevents opening programmes. Now, several viruses do that and you may not have all the same virus.

For once in my lifetime, Symantec has created a useful tool. Mind you, Symantec in line with its principal, created a tool which will not remove the virus but at least resolve the open with problem.

I could give you directives to modify registry entries but that would require time and in some cases be risky.

So after running the tool, all of you must download, install, update and run Malwarebyte.

So here are the steps:

1. Download, unzip and run Godzilla Fix:

https://community.broadcom.com/home

2. Download, install, update Malwarebyte and run a FULL (I insist FULL scan)

https://ccm.net/downloads/security-and-maintenance/4621-malwarebytes-anti-malware/

You may be required to reboot during the process.

3. After the scan delete the items found.

Now if none of you comeback to give me some feedback, my spirit will haunt you for eternity and I will cast a spell on your system. I'am serious.

Best regards

IMPORTANT FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE A VIRUS

Right click your program or link and choose "Run as". In the dialog, uncheck "Protect...". Say ok and now everything will work.

that fixed most thing but what about installing things? when ever I run and exe or install it doesnt give me the option to uncheck protect. otherthan that GREAT it was an excellent fix for most.

Thank you very much for your instructions!!! The same virus got a hold of both my computers within 24hrs of each other and only one of them had the registry problem since I was able to recognize it immediately.

Please keep up the insightful advice!!

Many many many thanks!

Stephen

Try this

Right click your program or link and choose "Run as". In the dialog, uncheck "Protect...". Say ok and now everything will work.

Let me know
1
I see Run As Administrator but nothing else, When I do that there is no Dialog called Protect, and what program or link am I supposed to be doing this on?

I'm having the same problem as Stephen. (I have Vista) I got a virus, was unable to open up anything as the virus hijacked my entire computer. I was finally able to rid myself of it by right clicking malwarebytes and "Run as Administrator". After I found and deleted the viruses, I restarted my computer. Now everything I click says, "choose the program you want to use to open this file". The only way to get ANYTHING to run is by right clicking and "Run as Administrator". I downloaded "Kill Godzilla", ran it (via right click "Run as Administrator"), restarted and no use.
0
Its working now. I ran a "System Restore" to a time just before I got the virus.
0
I am having similar problems - not being able to avoid the "choose a program" box. I do not see the prompt to either "run as" or "run as administrator". Am I looking in the wrong place? Or do you have any other ideas? I really appreciate any advice you may have!

Oh, and I have Vista.

I am trying to run these programs, but I keep coming up with the same message 'open with'. I have tried to run the programs through a flash drive, but they keep coming up with 'open with' as well. Any help would be amazing.

Dear Underdog,

Sacrificing a lamb on the alter for my humble Bionik friend would have been quite sufficient !

And what about me I'm his tutor and spiritual guide ? The picture on my profile should prove it to you.

Oh well, us guys that work the most always finish last without any glory. Poop!
