Laptops have a Function key that is dedicated for switching the external display on and off. Some laptops will toggle from laptop to external to both using the function key. Other laptops require you to change the options in the Control Panel Display screen. If you have a laptop with a Intel chip set, you should look for the "Intel GMA Driver" Icon in the Control Panel. From there you can control resolution and display properties of both screens.
