How to get internet access on Laptop?!

Hello,
I just recently recieved a Laptop with WindowsXP Home Edition for my birthday. The only problem that I'm having is the fact that I don't know how to set up Internet on it. I have Internet on my Desktop, but I want it on my Laptop too! Any suggestions? But with your answers, could you explain what hubs and modems are.. I'm extremely confused. Also, how could you set it up if your desktop is downstairs, but your laptop is up? Would I need to run cables all through my home or what? Please help!! Thank you.
