Windows XP can not format the hard drive after it's had Linux installed (it can't process the Linux Partitions). You can start the PC using the Linux CD and then delete the Linux partitions. If you don't know how to use Linux commands then you can download a program called "Killdisk" write it to a floppy disk and use it to delete the partitions on your hard disk.
