Cannot open programs in windows vista

quite suddenly my computer stopped recognizing any of my programs. when i clicked on the icons it asks what program to run it with like it doesn't recognize the file anymore. The program will work if i can go through and find it in the "open with" box or when i right click and "run as administrator". will someone pleases help me fix this problem
