Hard drive not recognized

help I just bought a hard drive for my sony vaio laptop but the computer says the disk is not found what can i do i don't know much about computers can someone help me

I have no pamphlet to follow to intall my norton360 version 3.0 dvd/cd rom. It was used yesterday. I have not been given any opportunity yet to supply my product number either. It has been asked for but there is no line to type it on supplied. I was using a symantec Help with Norton 360 product activation site. Maybe I have to supply the number after my attempt at activation but where do I successfully continue with this?. I have switched the computer on and off during my attempt too.

Some help with this matter would be appreciated.
