You mounted a different hard drive in the computer and it booted from that old hard drive that had Windows 98 on it? If both hard drives are still connected then you can change the BIOS "boot order" so that the Windows XP disk is the first disk to boot from. You might also have a problem with the drive jumpers. Both drives may be set to Master - then you need to change the jumper(s) on the Win 98 drive to "slave" in that case.
