Why do I not have sound?

Hello. Regular things on my computer, such as 'would you like to save this document' or 'This program has stopped working' etc is all making sound. But I cannot play music, whether it be from youtube, the news channel, or from windows media player. I do not know why it is doing this, but I need it and will be for the next two weeks. I hope you can help!
