I've found that an ealier forum had the solution in one shape or another. The key is powering down and removing the battery. An additional step involves depressing the power button for 2 minutes although I'm not sure what this action does exactly. Then replace the battery and boot up. Viola! Function is restored to both keyboard and trackpad.
