Hey

My laptop's had this problem: things kept popping up saying I need to buy products to fix my computer's anti virus etc. I gave it to my friend who fiddled with it (appears Internet Explorer is in "safe mode"?) but I couldn't open any programmes (including Internet Explorer, Mozilla, not even "Add or Remove Programmes")

Now, I can't even get it on: Just says "missing operating system". I do have the option to press F10 or 12, but have no idea what to do from there.

As you probably gathered, I'm not the most techno-savvy individual but would like to be able to fix this myself. (also, my CD drive does not work).

Please help! I'd love it if you could give me steps to follow to sort this out, steps suitable for a technological simpleton, please?

Try disconnecting battery and charger from laptop for about 15 mins then try again. Press f2 at start up if you still cant open into windows and select default mode and save (f10)
If and when windows opens follow my instructions below.
As I understand it you have a security center virus which appeared and is telling you that you have many viruses on your computer. The way to clear security centre is to open your computer in safe mode. To do this start your computer and hit F8 select safe mode with networking. You need to download a malware/spyware program you could try Malwarebytes you can download this for free on this site in downloads section or en.kioskea.net/.../telecharger-105-malwarebytes-anti-malware. When you have downloaded you need to run an update which you will find at the top of the page then run a scan and follow all the instructions given This should clear all the files left by security centre. You need to download a good anti-virus I use AVG9 Free edition you must update your anti-virus regularly. This problem often happens when your anti-virus program has expired. Turn off your computer and start normally

HOPE THIS WORKS FOR YOU

I disconnected the battery and charger over night, and this morningI tried pressing F2 and nothing happened. I pressed F10 to get in to Setup then F9 for Default Settings, and then Save. But, still nothing. It still just says "Missing operating system", and that's it.

If you have any other suggestions, I'd really appreciate them. But, thanks so much for your help so far.

Hi Tracy
Missing operating system is the system cannot find the hard drive. First go back into setup (BIOS) and see if your hard drive is detected it could be a damaged hard drive. But don't give up, you haven't told us what os or laptop you have so I am assuming you have XP and you have your recovery disk or installation disk.
If you go to this site you will find some ideas on how to solve the problem Ross Whitney gives a very good article on how to repair https://proposedsolution.com/solutions/windows-boot-startup-troubleshooting-guide/ This guide is mainly for desktops so the part about checking cables etc will not apply to you
