You are right! Why change a good recipe?
Here is how I got around the problem, let me know if it worked for you:
To open a Word doc in Word from Hotmail Word Apps.
You will see 2 lines of type next to the Word logo - The name of the document, and underneath, the line 'Download'. You have the option to click on either. Click on 'Download' and you will see the usual interface to Open or Save the Word document
