External hard drive not working

Hello,

i have a mac g4 and my external hard drive wont show up after its plugged in i tried different usb cables and still nothing i plugged up my other hard drive and thats works fine.

Please connect it instead of your CD ROM drive to see whether the problem gets solved.

its a portable hard drive so can you please explain to me what to connect it to
