The process is called Downgrading since Vista is latest to come after Win XP.
You need to format first the drive or partition. Without that the only way to do that is if you have upgraded your Win XP with Win Vista and saved the old XP files installation if it had given yuo the option that time.
Formatting the partition is the best option since it will eliminate all the glitches involved with hardware. A fresh copy so to speak.
