.swf videos will not play

Hello,
It is Aug. 24, 2010; in Mac OS 10.5.8, using Firefox 3.6.8, I cannot open my .swf files, or play those flash videos made with Jing. The failure message says "Adobe Reader could not open this file... it is not a supported file type; error 1409.
Why is "Adobe Reader" responding when I click on an swf file?
I have downloaded and installed Adobe Flash player 10 and Adobe Shockwave player 11.5. My system will not or cannot invoke them to open my .swf files.

Please help? Thank you.
