SATA drives not recoginized

My machine won't recognize my sata drives anymore but if i pull the drive and place in other machine...they work no problem.
So if the onboard sata controllers are gone...do i have to replace the whole motherboard?
If i got a pci sata card...that wouldn't work because i need to get drivers right?

The card will come with drivers.
