Do SATA-2 harddrives work on a SATA-1 laptop?

i have an old hp laptop and the harddrive recently died on me......im looking to buy a new harddrive but need to know if SATA-2 harddrives work on a SATA-1 laptop?
i am not very computer literate so if u could answer as simply as possible would be much apprieciated!

Hi there,

No as the connector is different if was on a desktop pc then it was possible as there is converter for it but on laptops not available.
