Phone connecting to internet when turned off?

Hello,

I recently lost my phone (Samsung T919 Behold) but I'm almost positive no one can use it because the battery was practically dead and you need a passcode in order to turn on the phone.

However, my gmail has indicated that my phone is still having activity in my email (it's automatic updates).

Is it possible that my phone is still getting updates from my Gmail if it is completely dead? Thanks!
