The f1 key settings on a hp windows 7 lap top

Hello,
i just currently bought a new lap top and say im in a game as such and go to use the f1 f2 f3 f4 keys etc instead of it useing the game function it brings me back to the desktop is there any way u can change your keybord settings or turn off the keys so i can continue playing or running programs without this happening all help would be great thanks
(f1= help) (f2=dim screan) f3 = brighter screan) f5= skip chapter (f6= play or pause )

what youre saying is when youre pressing your F keys they're doing the other function rather then F1 F2 etc?
HP by default set it up so you dont have to hold the Fn button to select the alternate option.
you'll need to disable this in the BIOS.
when starting up keeping hitting i think its F10 to enter setup.
under system configuration you need to disable action mode key (i think its called)
