Hello, 5 years old laptop running windows xp
prior to giving the laptop to a friend I erased all my files and documents in order to free as much hard disk space as possible. Unfortunatly I did something wrong : the dvd drive istalled in the computer is not responding any longer and can not find any trace of the related software the system restore is also not responding.
I have the recovery cd that came with the computer but can not use it being the dvd drive not responding.
the computer can still connect to the internet and download files

Does the DVD drive show in MyComputer ? DVD drives are either IDE or SATA (just like your hard drive) and don't normally need a specialized driver.

The DVD drive does not show in My computer any longer.
if I insert a disk I can ear a slight buzzing as if the unit is running but nothing shows on the screen

I would think that a 5 year old laptop is not worth what it would cost to have a technician replace the drive. You can buy an external USB drive but the laptop probably can't be set to boot from an external CD drive so you will not be able to load Windows. Sorry if I can't be of more help.
