I suspect you have the system cash or some other data set needed by XP on the second hard drive. You need to move all these data sets to the IDE drive.

look for pagefile.sys on the SATA disk. Windows will not boot if the file is not accessible. Google "moving pagefile.sys" for instructions on moving this file to the C drive.
