Cant access internet

Hello, I have a gateway laptop that uses windows 7. Since recently, my computer is picking up the connections and it says I have internet access. However, when I open a web page it is saying something like "web page cannot be displayed", or that the proxy is refusing connection (with mozilla firefox). WHAT SHOULD I DO? I AM DESPARATE TO KNOW.
