1. So,..., I think you installed a complete F/OSS Distro Like SUSE, Fedora, CentOS, or a thigs like new Ubuntu;
it's better to introduce your distro.
2. If that is, you don't have a practical Codec for playing your MPEG, MPEG2 and in some case MP3.
3. First way : Find and install codec :
3.1. http://xinehq.de/
3.2. http://developers.videolan.org/libdvdcss
4. Easy Way : Install SMPlayer (Shiped with Mandriva 2008) : It's play most of the Video Formats
5. What do I usually DO ?
5.1. Install OpenSUSE 10.3 ==> It's Play Music, and have a good Software Installation App (YaST).
5.2. Then, I Install SMPlayer From Mandriva 2008, for Watching Movies :)
6. Ofcource Installing Suitable Libraries / Codec is a General/Well/Professional Way, but it's need some infos about your Kernel/Distro and of cource your experience .

Or you can Instal OpenSUSE 11
then go to
http://opensuse-community.org/Restricted_Formats/10.3
and
http://opensuse-community.org/1-click-collection
and install needed codec/driver

then enjoy it
