Hi imranfida,
Try updating the Audio Drivers for the Sound Card (integrated audio chip on the motherboard) in the machine. You can download the drivers from the below mentioned link:
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-1420?driverId=NN9X1&osCode=WW1&fileId=2940571307&languageCode=en
Note: These drivers work for `Microsoft Windows 2000', `Microsoft Windows XP' and `Microsoft Windows XP x64'. If these drivers don't work for your Windows 7 Operating System do reply with the Device Instance ID of the Audio Card. To find the Device Instance ID of the Audio Card:
1. Right click the Computer icon on the Desktop.
2. Select Manage.
3. Select Device Manager under Computer Management from the left pane.
4. Then expand the ""Sound, video and game controllers"" from right pane.
5. Right click the Device listed.
6. Click Properties.
7. Go to the Details tab, and then select Device Instance Id from the drop down list.
8. Make a note of this Device Instance ID.
Do reply with results.
